Unlimited Pastimes

Movie 3: Lord Dāmodara - The Deliverance of the Twin Trees

The last month (07 Oct - 05 Nov) in the lunar calendar for devotees of Lord Krishna is called Kārtika - a sacred time when every act of devotion is said to multiply many-fold. It’s also the final stage of a four-month period of vows and austerities, so by the time Kārtika arrives, devotees everywhere are joyful and eager.

Throughout this month, temples glow with candles and ghee lamps as devotees offer light to the Lord each evening while singing an ancient eight-verse hymn - the Dāmodarāṣṭakam - a song that has been sung for thousands of years.

What makes Kārtika unique is that it focuses entirely on one beautiful pastime of Lord Krishna known as the Dāmodara-līlā. In Sanskrit, līlā (pronounced "Leela") means “divine pastime.” Dāmodara is one of Krishna's names — dāma means “rope,” and udara means “belly.” Thus, Dāmodara means “the One who was bound around His belly with a rope.”
